Our reliance on metaphors means that they can be a powerful tool for mental magic if we learn how to make them work for us rather than against us.
Managing metaphors
We use metaphors because theyâre how our brains work â we find it much easier to think in terms of things we know and experience. We can access what we donât know and express what we canât express in terms of what we do know and what we can express.
Thatâs a massive cognitive benefit. But thereâs a cognitive cost attached to metaphors too: itâs easy to forget that the metaphor isnât actually the thing itself. If we use them intentionally, they can help us be more creative and solve problems, not to mention communicate our ideas more effectively to others. But if weâre not aware of them, they can trip us up. Here are three ways metaphors can work against us:
