“Get in there.”

Tate fought to keep from stumbling as Savannah shoved him through the door of Hollis’s diner. He glanced over his shoulder and shot her a look.

“Find a table and sit down. Since you ruined my sandwich, you also owe me six dollars on top of lunch. Which you’re gonna pay for.”

He’d be mad she was treating him like a child if she didn’t look so scared, and if it wasn’t cute that she was worried about him. Then again, his emotions were all over the place since yesterday.

Tate pulled his phone out as he walked to an open booth. He sent a quick text to Lex, asking how she was doing. As he slid across the vinyl seat, his phone buzzed.

Fine.

Tate replied that he’d be there later that day. Was that soon enough? She wasn’t his child, just the daughter of a woman who’d been part of his life a long time ago. He cared about her, though. Enough to want to make sure she was all right when she had no family in town, just a whole lot of folks prepared to look out for her. Like it or not, they were part of each other’s lives in a way he couldn’t ignore, no matter that he’d rather run from his grief.

Savannah sat with jerky movements, then swiped a menu from between the napkins and the ketchup and held it up in front of her face.

Hollis wandered over.

Tate flipped the mug over and slid it to the end of the table.

“Doin’ okay?”

He shrugged. “Nothing strawberry waffles won’t fix.”

She smiled and her round face flushed. “Detective Wilcox?”

“Eggs benedict. A whole wheat English muffin.” She slid her cup over as well. “And extra cream.”

Hollis filled her cup. “Coming right up.” Before she left, she said, “Will your other friend be joining you today? I haven’t seen him since y’all were in before.”

Tate shrugged, regardless of the fact he and Phil had been having a text conversation most of the morning, passing information back and forth. “He’s been pretty busy lately.”

If he said Phil was working a lot, she’d only ask what he did for a living. Tate would have to pile another lie on top of the stack that already existed surrounding the man occasionally known as Phil, but mostly known around Last Chance as a biker and drug transporter by the name of “Hammer.”

When he said nothing else, her face flashed with disappointment. Hollis wandered off.

“What friend?”

He glanced at Savannah. “I have friends.”

“Like the FBI?”

“That’s a family thing.” He shrugged, about to give her more details that sounded like something but actually were more of nothing when Mia walked in.

She waved and headed to the counter, where she retrieved a white paper bag with a receipt stapled to the fold. She hefted the bag up, walking towards them and snuggling it in her arms like it was a squirmy baby.

“Anything from the scene?”

Savannah said, “Murder weapon. Tests from evidence we collected from the Aggerton crime scene are starting to come back.
