The Rohingya

The Rohingya are an ethnic group that have traditionally lived in the area that is now Myanmar (Burma). They have been described as one of the world’s most persecuted ethnic minorities. The Rohingya are particularly distinct as an ethnic group in Myanmar because they are largely Sunni Muslim and speak an Indo-European language while most of the Myanmar population speaks Burmese, a Sino-Tibetan language, and practices Buddhism. A major government persecution of the Rohingya began in Myanmar in 2016 and is ongoing. More than 430,000 Rohingya have fled into neighboring Bangladesh since the crisis began, and many more are expected.
