Danny hurt. Facing him and Jen in the hugest of awkward situations proved Shelly’s character worth. Danny’s personal pain was measured by his crushed pride.

“Shell, do you mean you have information about…about the fire?” It couldn’t be anyone she knew…please, please, please…not someone jealous? Not a PR stunt gone horribly wrong…The thoughts tangled and grew in his mind like sticky, twining weeds.

Jen untangled her legs and rose.

Shelly took a step closer and handed her phone to Danny. “No, wait, Jen. Please, you should hear this too. You wanted to know if something was bothering me, Danny.” Shelly looked away as if commandeering courage. “Earlier…um,” she said and faced him. “You…when you…and I…I didn’t want to worry you. I didn’t tell you the truth.” Her voice dropped to a whisper. “I’m sorry. I trust you…it’s not that.” She gestured toward the phone Danny forgot he was holding. “Read it.”

Danny stared at the phone. Read what?

Jen heaved a sisterly sigh and plucked the phone from his hand.

“You won’t last in this business, girl,” Jen read. “I put up with you when Jovian handled you, but I will torch anything you try on your own.” Her voice grew shakier. “Get it through your head. This is a friendly warning. I already took your pitiful little contracts back when they came crawling. You got nothing left. Go away like a good little mouse.”

Danny surged to his feet. “Who sent that?” He reached for the phone. Clumsy fingers couldn’t figure out how to scroll.

“Tommy Lord,” Shelly whispered.

“Lord?” Danny scrunched his brows. “We got rid of him.”

“Apparently not.” Shelly looked at Jen. Jen shrugged.

“What did he mean when he said he took your contracts back?” Danny asked. “Why would clients go crawling to him? If you had signed contracts, how could he take them?”

Shelly reached for her phone and stood there, fiddling with it, turning it over and over. “I have to look at the contract language. That’s what some of the calls were about. I’m sorry I’ve been so distracted. I haven’t been giving my undivided attention to this film’s publicity campaign. I’m so sorry I’ve let you all down.”

Jen, the loyal trooper Danny knew her to be, obviously decided to throw in with Shelly. Jen put her arm across Shelly’s shoulders. “You have not let anyone down in any way. I’ve been on tour before. Not as big as this for sure, but you’ve gone out of your way to make sure things run smoothly. You’ve even managed to please Lydia Danes, and that’s not easy.”

Shelly scoffed. “Her name sells itself. Besides, she’s all purr in private.”

“Even so,” Jen said, “you’ve done wonders. Shelly, people don’t trust Tommy Lord. He’s such a creep.”

“What did your lawyer say?” Danny asked.

Shelly shook her head. “You two don’t get it, do you? This message wasn’t for me. I’m not worried about myself. Check his words.” She tapped on the screen of her phone to bring the message back up and held it up for them to reread.

Danny shared a look with his sister after buzzing through the disturbing text.
