Danny hurt. Facing him and Jen in the hugest of awkward situations proved Shellyâs character worth. Dannyâs personal pain was measured by his crushed pride.
âShell, do you mean you have information aboutâ¦about the fire?â It couldnât be anyone she knewâ¦please, please, pleaseâ¦not someone jealous? Not a PR stunt gone horribly wrongâ¦The thoughts tangled and grew in his mind like sticky, twining weeds.
Jen untangled her legs and rose.
Shelly took a step closer and handed her phone to Danny. âNo, wait, Jen. Please, you should hear this too. You wanted to know if something was bothering me, Danny.â Shelly looked away as if commandeering courage. âEarlierâ¦um,â she said and faced him. âYouâ¦when youâ¦and Iâ¦I didnât want to worry you. I didnât tell you the truth.â Her voice dropped to a whisper. âIâm sorry. I trust youâ¦itâs not that.â She gestured toward the phone Danny forgot he was holding. âRead it.â
Danny stared at the phone. Read what?
Jen heaved a sisterly sigh and plucked the phone from his hand.
âYou wonât last in this business, girl,â Jen read. âI put up with you when Jovian handled you, but I will torch anything you try on your own.â Her voice grew shakier. âGet it through your head. This is a friendly warning. I already took your pitiful little contracts back when they came crawling. You got nothing left. Go away like a good little mouse.â
Danny surged to his feet. âWho sent that?â He reached for the phone. Clumsy fingers couldnât figure out how to scroll.
âTommy Lord,â Shelly whispered.
âLord?â Danny scrunched his brows. âWe got rid of him.â
âApparently not.â Shelly looked at Jen. Jen shrugged.
âWhat did he mean when he said he took your contracts back?â Danny asked. âWhy would clients go crawling to him? If you had signed contracts, how could he take them?â
Shelly reached for her phone and stood there, fiddling with it, turning it over and over. âI have to look at the contract language. Thatâs what some of the calls were about. Iâm sorry Iâve been so distracted. I havenât been giving my undivided attention to this filmâs publicity campaign. Iâm so sorry Iâve let you all down.â
Jen, the loyal trooper Danny knew her to be, obviously decided to throw in with Shelly. Jen put her arm across Shellyâs shoulders. âYou have not let anyone down in any way. Iâve been on tour before. Not as big as this for sure, but youâve gone out of your way to make sure things run smoothly. Youâve even managed to please Lydia Danes, and thatâs not easy.â
Shelly scoffed. âHer name sells itself. Besides, sheâs all purr in private.â
âEven so,â Jen said, âyouâve done wonders. Shelly, people donât trust Tommy Lord. Heâs such a creep.â
âWhat did your lawyer say?â Danny asked.
Shelly shook her head. âYou two donât get it, do you? This message wasnât for me. Iâm not worried about myself. Check his words.â She tapped on the screen of her phone to bring the message back up and held it up for them to reread.
Danny shared a look with his sister after buzzing through the disturbing text.
