Characters
Character covers the people you are going to write about. It’s helpful to make an outline of the traits of your people, that is, draw a picture of them with words, such as:
Sophia was at least 6 feet tall. Her skin was black-gold and her eyelashes curled over her eyes. She wore a faded T-shirt that was too small for her.
In these three sentences, we were able to include at least five descriptive traits.
You must draw on actual experience with these people. Sometimes you will know them only through other writers. They may not be alive or available. You will have to find accurate depictions of them to fit into the story. Here’s where the fiction writer has an advantage. They can make it up, but you can’t. You are bound to be true to the real life people you are writing about. An advantage over the fiction writer, however, is that you know the events and ending before you start and you probably already understand their significance.
