Chapter 21

Unwanted Weight Gain

At some point in our lives, we all find something that we would like to change. Ask any of your friends and they will offer endless advice on things that you could change (but only in a helpful, non-offensive, loving, you-are-just-fine-as-you-are–but-if-you-wanted-to–not-saying-that-you-have-to–only-if-it-is-really-important-to-you-and-your-life’s-journey–possibly–maybe-without-being-critical–you-could kind of way). There is more to life than healing injuries and building bigger muscles. Can we use the principle of efficiency-guided change to understand other areas of our bodies?

One of the most common changes we observe over time is body weight and shape. In our modern world, unwanted body weight has, for some, become an obsession. The questions of why we gain more of it, and how to maintain a healthy weight effectively, have become a huge focus and continue to feed the billion-dollar-diet-and-exercise industry. As with all the topics I’ve covered in this book, my aim when I talk about unwanted weight gain (and believe me, I’ve been there) is to illustrate the principles behind it: why we gain unwanted weight, how the cycle of overload and repair applies, and the role of both food and hormones in weight change.
