Assignment of Weights

Alternative weighting schemes have been suggested, such as weighting by the quality of the study, with points given based on the number of variables [22]. The problem with weighting is that one has started the meta-analysis in order to have an objective method to combine studies to provide an overall summary, and with weighting we are subjectively assigning weights to factors so that we can objectively calculate a summary measure. However, this aforementioned weighting is but one scheme and its use has been questioned by many experts in the field. Most meta-investigators now use fixed, random, or Bayesian approaches [23].
