Chapter Ten

Johanna held her breath. Someone was down here, and it was not Henry or Barnard. It was someone lighter weight than a man. She stood up because the person had sent the critters scattering, and she didn’t want any jumping in her lap. She leaned against the stone wall and waited to see who it was.

She held her breath, her blood pulsating through her body at a furious pace, one she told herself to calm, but she couldn’t, the fear out of control as she thought of all the possibilities. Would it be Barnard with his twisted tendencies? Or Henry carrying an axe? Whoever it turned out to be, she was helpless against them.

She was at their mercy. Completely.

Or perhaps it was her knight. Aldreda was always talking about a strong English knight coming to rescue her from her bland life. He would lift her onto his horse, swear his love for her, and carry her off into the sunset.

How she wished there were someone like that for her.

“My lady.” A whisper caught her. She jerked her face up to the window and saw a lad she didn’t recognize staring at her.

Or did she know him? Was he the lad who had been with the dark-haired stranger who’d helped her up from her fall?

“My lady, I’ll get ye away from here. Ye can live with us in Morrigan Castle.”

She raced to the door, nodding to the lad. “Aye, please. He says he’ll cut my hand off if I do not tell him where the cook went or who took her. I truly do not know. I saw the man with dark hair, but I have no idea who he is.” She panted, not realizing how nervous she was at the thought of getting caught. “Please. Help me escape. I’ll go with you anywhere, anywhere but here with Henry and Barnard and Aldreda and…and…the only ones I liked left and I do not know where they went. And I hate rats! I cannot sleep when there are rats near me. I’ve had no sleep. No sleep at all.” She did her best to hide the tremors in her hand, wondering if she could even walk up the stairs on her own. Little food, no sleep, haunted thoughts, cold temperatures. How long could she survive this form of torture?

“Maud and Liam are with us at Morrigan Castle, a kind chieftain we have. Ye’ll be much happier there.” He darted around the passageway looking for the key to her chamber. “Where is the key?”

She looked about and pointed, “Over there on the wall.”

The lad moved over and tried to jump but it was too high for him.

“Hurry,” she said. “And how did you get in here?”

“Through a window at the back, then I snuck down the back staircase. I cannae reach the key.” He jumped several times and was able to knock it, but it didn’t fall off the nail.

“Hurry. There’s a stool over there.”

The lad ran to the stool just as the door opened and Smalley entered, bellowing, “I’ll kill you, whoever you are.
