Chapter Thirteen
The next morning was very busy. Everyone in the house was packing their things, I had to stop packing every so ofter to keep going into the kid's bedroom to make sure they grabbed everything from their beds, under their beds, the floors and off the tables. James and I then looked all around the house for any stray toys or clothing that they would have missed but found nothing. Jax and Tiffy had their bags packed and into their car around the same time that we did, we were doing great on time despite the rush. We wanted to leave before sunrise just in case someone was watching the house, or someone was to show up unexpectedly while we had no backup and no safe place for the kids to hide, in case anything bad happened.
We were halfway to a private airport when Elijah's phone started to ding repeatedly, I looked over my shoulder at him in the backseat as his thumbs moved quickly over the keyboard. That gut feeling came back as I watched him, his brows furrowed and what I could only explain as anger crossed over his face, but it was only for a second until he put his phone away and smiled when he looked up.
"Who was that?" I asked with a smile.
"It's no one, just a notification."
I studied him for a moment. You wouldn't type a long message out because of a notification, no one would. He looked angry, livid, and it all started when Mark and Jessa told us that message. I wanted to ask a million questions on what he knows because it could be the key to our survival, but it looked almost personal to him by the way he was acting and got secretive, the Elijah I knew wouldn't keep things from me, he would tell me instantly if something was wrong. So if he believes he's got this, then I trust him. He will tell me all about it when he's either eliminate the threat or when he can't hold it in anymore, and I will do my best to help him in any way because that's what family does.
I turned around in my seat, watching as the trees passed us by on the highway and listening as the kids talked to each other and laughed. James reached over, taking my hand in his and absentmindedly started rubbing the pad of his thumb over my engagement ring. The act itself was so ordinary, but it felt like a thousand butterflies were instantly released in my stomach every time I looked at it, or he touched it. I didn't want to come down from my cloud of happiness, but eventually, I would have too.
We eventually drove down a road that leads us off of the highway and into a small town, there were no signs of the name and if there was I didn't see them. The town was smaller than any other town I've been to, it was nothing but farmlands and gas stations, every now and then I'd see a small grocery store.
