When she opened her eyes, it was dark outside, she lay on the ground staring at the starlit sky and couldn’t figure out why someone kept shaking her.

At once recalling that the cottage had burned, she sat up and realized she was in front of what was now a pile of ashes. People meandered about, some shaking their heads, others looking to one another and speaking in low tones.

“We heard about Mege,” Lattie said. At the sound of her friend’s voice, Esme turned and saw that Lattie sat on the ground next to her, while her husband stood nearby looking on.

Confused, Esme looked to her friend. “What happened?”

“Yer cottage burned to the ground. Ian and I came running hoping ye were not inside. We didnae find ye for a long time. Someone happened upon ye behind the cottage on the ground and carried ye here.”

“My coins!” Esme had run to the back, hoping to get in. It was futile. The sack that contained the coin she’d been so carefully saving was gone.

“Oh, no.” She wrapped her arms around herself and rocked as tears ran down her face.

As the mixture of ash and tears plopped onto her dirty arms she’d never felt so low, so lost.

“I give up,” she muttered over and over. “I do not wish to continue.”

“Shh,” Lattie said rubbing Esme’s shoulder. “Come on, there is nae much that can be done here. Come to our house.”

A man came rushing toward her. “Where is Laith? Was yer brother inside?”

It was the perfect opportunity to ensure no one went after him. The look of astonishment on her face must have been convincing because everyone who stood near went silent.

Esme fell over to the ground. It was an act, but at the same time she could not withstand any more as all strength left her.
