Kelly looked down. He placed his fork carefully by his plate and folded his napkin into neat quarters.

“I get what you’re saying, I do…”

“You’ve been avoiding him. Why?”

“I don’t know.” Kelly stood and walked to the window where he could watch the street. Already the

evening crowd was beginning to gather, barely clad beautiful men and women, walking in pairs and groups,

leaving their apartments for the bars and the restaurants that abounded on these streets. “Yeah, I do. It’s because I’m a freak. Because you had to put me on a train to go meet my boyfriend, and I had a panic attack in the restaurant, and I couldn’t let him touch me in the car—”

“What?”

Kelly leaned hard against the glass, feeling, as always, that something important and impenetrable

stood between him and what he saw on the outside. “I wanted him. Oh, you have no idea, Will. What a

fucking joke. He was there, and I wanted him and I just couldn’t let it all go…” His breath fogged the glass a little and he watched as it spread, and then disappeared.

“What makes you think he’ll call you now?”

Kelly swallowed hard. “I hope he’ll call. I asked him to. I called him and left a message, asking would

he please call me.”

“Oh good, baby,” said Will gently from where he still sat at the glass coffee table, food forgotten.

“You did good.”
