Having his assistant in the same room was rare. Rosa did all the time-consuming things. She’d visited Miss Anna Mae’s for Yolanda’s peach cobbler. She’d raised hell about having to venture into a sex store to buy the execution hood. It was last-minute when Maliah switched up the program on him last Saturday morning. She consulted with the construction company, who had added all the kinky quirks to his home. Now, the fifty-three-year-old with pocked skin and a bright smile set the box of magnets onto the table in his suite.
“You could’ve called me down,” Ephraim said, coming from the bathroom. A towel was wrapped around his waist after a fresh shower, his thick, dark hair plastered to his head.
“Seven years of magnets, not so heavy.” She shrugged. “I need something to do. You’ve never settled in one place too long except for the Maldives after Rebecca went after Daniel.”
He snorted. “Eight years. Maliah’s dad allowed her to start vacationing with my family when she was thirteen.”
Rosa placed a hand into the box, where she’d bubble wrapped each one. “We’ve lugged this thing from continent to continent, and here I was off an entire year.”
He went to the silver room service cart and grabbed at a tiny glass dome. Underneath was a cup of coffee. Without adding anything to it, Ephraim took a sip. “Put the PI on Maliah on notice.”
Her eyebrow arched. She never questioned him, though, over the years, they’d become close. It was likely the only female conversation he had that didn’t lead to sex.
“All right, fire the man who’s watched your precious LeeLee for almost ten years, check.”
Ephraim gestured for Rosa to sit down. He picked up another dome, this one larger and silver, then placed it in front of her. “Figure out how to get into my email system for the Hurt Room. I have something in mind.”
“Like what?” She seemed wary of his plans. Had Ephraim followed his assistant’s facial expressions, there’d have been no loss of control on his part.
“Eat.” He gestured for her. “It’s your favorite.”
“Digame, Eph?” Rosa snipped in Spanish for him to tell her.
“You sure are asking a lot of questions today, Rosa. After you eat those pancakes—I pulled a few teeth to get cinnamon on them. Next, I’m going to insist that you go for the bar exam.”
She rolled her eyes and began to cut her pancakes. “So, what will we be saying in this email? ‘Please meet me as scheduled on Saturday? I’ll grovel and bemoan, my sweet LeeLee, and you can play Dom’?”
“Doubt that’s what I’m going for, Rosa. Revoke Nori’s access. And I’m not sure yet. Maybe I’ll ask to meet her before? After? I don’t know.”
Rosa stuffed her mouth with pancakes. “What happened to flowers? I was kidding about the meeting. Might be better if you start with flowers.”
“Maliah isn’t a big flower person.” He took another sip of the coffee. “Whatever I do has to be big.”
She stood up, notepad and pen in her hand.
