CHAPTER ELEVEN

Knowing she was betrothed made entering a ball very different. She did not care if no other man looked her way, for she was getting married to the Earl of Stourton. And tonight was the first time anyone would see them together officially since she had agreed to marry him.

Mama sparkled as they entered the ballroom, and Papa had even decided to accompany them. Tonight was the triumph of all of their efforts. Lady Juliet Chant had made a good match. Juliet wondered if she would ever be as perfect as Mama, especially in social situations. Would being married, and no longer having to impress every young man who entered the room, finally give her some confidence?

If a little disappointment had settled in her stomach at the fact that he wanted to marry her because of affection, and the wish for an heir, and not for romantic reasons, she did not let it bubble to the surface.

She was determined to enjoy tonight. Owen had said he would see her there, and she was eager to see him again.

The kiss between them had been replaying in her mind since it had happened the previous day. She knew they were unlikely to have any privacy at the ball to kiss…but he would at least dance with her, and that would have to be enough for now.

The large ballroom was full of well-dressed guests, but her eyes honed in on Owen almost immediately. He stood near the refreshments, his hands behind his back, and a smile on her face that set her heart racing.

She had eyes for no one but him, and her whole body tingled in anticipation as he crossed the dance floor to join them.

He swept a low bow, and addressed her parents first, never seeming to put a foot wrong in his behaviour.

Except when he was kissing her…

"Good evening, Your Graces. Lady Juliet."

Her cheeks flushed at the sound of her name on his lips. Was it dangerous to feel so affected by him, that even his voice made her ache to be closer to him?

She did not know, but she could not change the way she felt, even if she had wanted to. She knew her heart was far more deeply involved in this than his was – but tonight, as he asked her to dance, she could not bring herself to care.
