“It’s my fault, my lord. I forgot to inform your mother when I planned to return.” Isabella got to her feet. “If this is an inconvenient time, we can leave.”

Following her friend’s lead, Annalise stood as well. Lord Burman’s eyes darted between the two of them, excitement lighting in his hard gaze.

“Of course not. Please, ladies, come sit with me.” He indicated the sofa which he stood in front of.

Sharing a nervous look with Isabella, Annalise decided to reclaim her seat, as did Isabella. Had they taken up the viscount on his offer, the two of them would have had to sit on either side of him. A shudder wormed up her spine.

Lord Burman glared, then slid into the seat beside her, making sure to push the chair closer to her. As his thigh pressed against hers, she tried to move away without him noticing. Unfortunately, his leg only followed hers and increased the pressure.

“You don’t usually come with Lady Isabella. To what do I owe the pleasure?” His hot breath blew across her face, and she had to stop herself from gagging.

“I thought Lady Burman would welcome another visitor.” Annalise kept her body erect, attempting to keep herself in the most formal position possible.

“Do you think she would know if you remained in the room?” His voice lowered as he leaned in closer. “Your friend has captured her full attention. The two of us could be enjoying a stroll, and she wouldn’t even be aware of your departure. I’m positive your friend wouldn’t begrudge you the activity.”

Biting her lip, she glanced at Isabella for guidance, but her friend was too caught up in describing the latest fashions from France to the viscountess. This was exactly why she hadn’t wanted her friend coming here alone. However, her guess seemed to be wrong since the viscount didn’t seem to be concerned over an additional guest.
