Sitting next to the stove this morning, I’m struck with how the sensation of warmth merges so indistinguishably with the silence. I feel the wind whistling through my back, as if my body and the room and what is beyond my window is one. I am part of something widespread, gossamer, vast.

There is little between me and the hardness under my feet, the light that blisters across the hermitage floor or the acrid smell of tea steeping on the stove. Nor am I resisting the remnants of sadness I can still feel in my pectoral muscles. Feelings and thoughts and silence and the whistling wind seem to weave together here, thick almost, concatenations of some nearly liquid being. Silence has become stately. And I am no longer so cut off from the world.
