ANYA
Dina clears her throat, looking at me with an accusing look.
âWhat?â I ask.
She shakes her head. âYouâve been glowing ever since that first day Mr. Morozov left your door unlocked.â She arches a brow. âIs there something going on with you two?â
Despite wanting to keep cool, heat flares over my skin and I know the answer is written over my face. âPerhaps.â
Her expression turns stern. âIâve known Valery since he was a little boy and he has a heart of gold under all that crime boss bullshit.â She points at me. âDonât hurt him. Your family ties are worrying, to say the least.â
Itâs amusing that she believes Iâd be the one to hurt him. The mob boss who kidnapped me from my home and took my innocence. âWhat makes you think Iâd be the one causing any hurt?â
âBecause all the staff have noticed the change in him since you arrived. Heâs less short and snappy, which suggests you make him happy.â
The heat that was flaring over my skin intensifies, and I wonder if that could be true. Is it possible that the hardened pakhan of the Morozov Bratva cares for me?
I grab my orange juice and take a long sip. âBelieve me, I think Iâll be the one hurt, not him.â
She nods. âAs long as you arenât playing him, considering who your father is.â
Hurt claws at my throat, as Iâve told her all about my father and what an asshole heâs been to me all my life, and yet she believes Iâd still be loyal to him. âI told you, I hate my father.â Standing, I head toward the exit. âIâm going to watch a movie.â
Dina perhaps senses that she has angered me. âIâm sorry, Anya. You can just never be too careful when it comes to the line of work Valery is in.â
I turn to face her.
She shakes her head. âBefore Valeryâs mother died, she made me promise Iâd look out for him.â
My brow furrows. âWhen was that?â
âHe was only ten years old when she died of lung cancer.â
I nod in response. At least his mother left because she had no choice. The pain Iâve carried for years over my motherâs abandonment has been deep-rooted and a weight I wish I could let go of.
âYouâve never mentioned your mother,â she says.
I shake my head. âNothing to mention. She abandoned me and my brother fifteen years ago.â
Dinaâs brow furrows. âReally?â
I nod in response. âYes, I havenât heard from her since.â
âWho told you that she abandoned you?â
The question seems irrelevant. âMy father. Why?â
Her throat bobs as she swallows. âI knew your mother, Anya. She didnât abandon you.â
âYou knew her?â
She nods. âMaria Lebedev worked in the soup kitchen I volunteered at in Moscow years ago. The day she went missing, there was a lot of talk.â
I walk back toward her and take a seat at the kitchen table. âI donât remember her very well. I was only eight when she left.â
Dina sits down too. âThe truth is, the rumor going around was that sheâd told your father she was leaving him and taking you and your brother.
