Stage 2: What might happen?

The second stage in assessing risk, having reached some conclusions about what is happening, is to move on to the future. Speculations about what might happen are linked to a time frame so that decisions can be made about the urgency with which professionals need to respond. Being clear about the particular time frame also helps to draw attention to the differences between the acute and chronic forms of abuse. Is there too much concentration upon immediate risks with the result that the longer-term dangers to the child’s development are overlooked?

The clearer and more thorough the assessment of current family functioning, the easier it is to predict what might happen. Speculations fall into three main groups:

Will the current problematic behaviour continue?

What will be the impact of known imminent events on family functioning?

Will parental behaviour change significantly and become more dangerous?
