BURKE ON TAXATION, COMMERCE, AND EMPIRE

Ireland’s ambiguous imperial status, as a kingdom possessed of its own legislature but also as an economically dependent colony, generated many eighteenth-century political debates in Britain about the status of Irish commerce and the place of Ireland within the broader Atlantic economy.19 Two of the most important of these concerned the desirability of an absentee tax and Irish free trade. Taken together, Burke’s views on these two issues demonstrate his lifelong commitment to the British Empire in his homeland, and his prioritizing of the empire’s survival over and above all other considerations related to Ireland.
