Ecuadorian Pick-up Lines

There was a time when Ecuadorian gentlemen would show their appreciation of a fair lady passing on the street by reciting a piropo, a line of romantic poetry. Piropos can sound quite cheesy to foreign ears. They usually revolve around stolen hearts, fallen angels, or stars in the sky. You still hear piropos like: “Cada vez que pienso en ti, una estrella se apagara; te juro que pronto en el cielo no quedaría nada” (“Every time I think about you a star stops shining; I swear that soon there’ll be nothing left in the night sky”), or the classic “Que alguien llame a la policía—me acaban de robar el corazón” (“Call the police—somebody just stole my heart”). Not all piropos are sweet and innocent and there has even been a government campaign to put an end to crude piropos in the street, equating them with other forms of sexual harassment. If you hear somebody catcalling you, the best strategy is to do what Ecuadorian women do: ignore it completely and keep walking.
