However, a few individuals, especially adolescents, experience an increase in suicidal thoughts or feelings when beginning treatment with SSRIs or SNRIs. This is obviously a potential development that needs to be monitored carefully, especially at the start of a new trial of medication.

Bupropion (Wellbutrin) is an antidepressant that does not belong to any of the major classes of antidepressants just described. It is an effective medication, but in an early study of its use for individuals with bulimia nervosa, several patients developed seizures. It was never figured out precisely why this happened, but there was suspicion that something about having an eating disorder made patients more vulnerable to having a seizure during treatment with bupropion. In addition, the type of bupropion available at the time was immediate release, meaning it entered the bloodstream rapidly, possibly leading to levels that were too high. Since then, delayed-release forms of bupropion have been developed and are on the market. Nonetheless, because of the occurrence of seizures among people with bulimia nervosa taking bupropion, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) strongly recommends against prescribing bupropion for those with histories of bulimia nervosa or anorexia nervosa.
