With a history dating back to ancient Roman empires, prunes were a desired fruit to have during winter because they could be easily stored. While sun-drying was the original way to turn plums into prunes, today commercial dehydration has taken over the drying process. On many US packages of prunes, you will also see “dried plums,” which was added to labels in 2001 in hopes of making them more appealing to consumers.
