PART ONE: OPTIMIZING YOUR ENVIRONMENT
PURIFYING YOUR AIR
For Natalie, we began to assess her environmental inflammation with a complete revamp of her home environment. This meant taking care of anything that would cause irritation. One thing we did for her was clean up the air in her home. Air purifiers are aptly named, as they work to purify the air in your home by pulling those airborne dust and pollen particles out of the air, then recirculating purified air.
Itâs my greatest recommendation to invest in an effective air purifierâand this recommendation is for everyone, not just those who have allergies or asthma. Every time you open your door, more dust, chemicals, bacteria, and pollen particles can enter your home. You bring them in on your shoes, and if you have dogs, they can bring in plenty of allergens from rolling in the grass and playing at the dog park. Even your own hair can trek pollen and allergens into the safety of your home. Thankfully, air purifiers take care of the purification for you, so you donât constantly have to worry about new irritants in the air.
Think of an air purifier as a vacuum cleaner. You can purchase one that will be transported from room to room, taking turns purifying the air in each room. If you donât yet have an air purifier, realize that every time you go to sleep at night, youâre breathing in air with irritants that are affecting you. Dust mites from the unswept corners of your basement are coming up through the vents, pollen that became attached to your sweater during your walk yesterday is now airborne, and if you have pets, their dander is swirling around you, too. As you breathe while you sleep (or anytime youâre at home doing anything!), youâre inhaling these irritants, and your immune system is immediately getting to work to defend the body. No wonder chronic inflammation can occur!
I also recommend keeping air constantly circulating, which air purifiers certainly help with. You should also exchange the air volume in your home every day by simply opening windows in your house. Try to open windows in each room in your house or apartment at least three times a week to bring in that new, fresh, charged air, and circulate out the stagnant, stale air.
How often do you clean up your space? Aside from spring cleaning, I urge you to dust off your picture frames, sweep the floors, wipe down tables and desks, and keep your immediate environment tidy and clean. This will also help with the air in your home, because when dust particles settle on the floor or on other household items, they arenât easily removed by opening windows or using your air purifier. How amazing does it feel to have a freshly deep-cleaned home? Ahhh. Why experience that bliss only here and there? Keep your home tidy, fresh, and clean every day to boost your mood as well as your immune system.
