The embodiment of French charm, with brasserie dishes that have stood the test of time.

Will Ricker seems to own a pan-Asian eatery in every cool neighbourhood in London. Eight Over Eight, a sister of the celebrity-lined E&O (see Crazy Homies), serves good dim sum, sushi and tempura as well as pad Thai and steamed sea bass specials. Its success is down to the quality of the food, stylish interior design and killer cocktails.
The Five Fields
8–9 Blacklands Terrace, SW3 2SP

Old-school fine dining values but more of a modern outlook, especially when it comes to sourcing vegetables and herbs from their own kitchen garden in East Sussex. They’ve earned their Michelin star through quality on the plate.
Restaurant Ours
264 Brompton Road, SW3 2AS

Another place with an odd name. With so many restaurants in London, inevitably there are going to be a few duds. The introduction on the website ‘What’s Ours, is yours’, is equally strange, in my view. However, I’m going to give much credit to Tom Sellers, the young culinary director, for his confidence and drive (PP).
Tartufo
1 Cadogan Gardens, SW3 2RJ
020 7730 6383
Situated on the lower-ground floor of a red-brick Victorian mansion block below a very discreet and high-quality hotel. The modern European food here is refined and elegant. Alexis Gauthier oversees the menus and brings brilliance to bear on the plate.
Tom’s Kitchen
27 Cale Street, SW3 3QP
0207 349 0202 www.tomskitchen.co.uk
Open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, Tom Aikens’ restaurant is a multi-layered operation, with a ground-floor dining room, a first-floor bar, and private dining rooms on the upper floors. The pleasing menu ranges from the signature seven-hour confit of lamb for two to simple delights such as fish and chips and (very fine) sausages and mash with onion gravy.
