Pasta should be cooked al dente (all DEN-tay); this means it should be chewy, not mushy. Break open a piece of cooked pasta. If you see a thin white line or white dots in the middle, it’s not done yet. The inside of the pasta should all be clear yellow.

Wiener schnitzel (VEE-nur shnit-sel) is a special dish from Austria. Thin slices of veal are breaded and then deeped-fried. There is a story that hundreds of years ago, the ruler of Austria liked his veal covered in flakes of gold. People wanted to eat what he ate, but most could not afford to wrap their food in gold. A golden breadcrumb covering was created instead.
