Though not located in Kirkland, the Wilburton Trestle is unquestionably the most dramatic point along the former Lake Washington Belt Line. It is seen here around 1905 shortly after its completion. Richards Road runs beneath the trestle, and the water at right is Mercer Slough, then much deeper because the lake was nine feet higher. Shallow-draft steamboats were then able to navigate from the lake all the way up to Wilburton. (KCA.)

South Kirkland resident Louis “Louie” Marsh (known as “2E” by close friends and family, thanks to his younger brother Phil’s repeated childhood mispronunciation of “Louie”) was a highly talented metallurgist and engineer who was one of the first people hired by the Boeing Airplane Company. Highly successful early in his career, he built the spectacular Marsh Mansion, which still stands on its original location on Lake Washington Boulevard.
