Here are some design and programming decisions you’ll need to make about multiple-choice questions:

• Will there be only one right answer or multiple right answers?

• How many options can you have? Do the options have to be the same for every question?

• How will the options be presented? Check boxes, radio buttons, drop-down menu, or hot spot?

When developing multiple-choice questions, keep these tips in mind:

• Use realistic distracters (the “wrong” answers).

• If you are using randomized options, do not put letters next to the options or in the remediation. When appropriate, use “all of these” or “none of these” instead of “all of the above” or “none of the above,” so options can be put anywhere on the screen.

• If you are using the word “not” in the question, emphasize it with bolding, capitalization, or underlining, so the learner doesn’t accidentally skim over it. For example: Which of the following situations is NOT an example of …”

• If learners can pick more than one correct answer, be sure to tell them.
