The New York Times stated, “As many as 30,000 people are thought to have been killed or disappeared,” during Argentina’s “Dirty War” years from 1976 to 1983. This article also emphasized that the dictatorship printed a list of names of artists and intellectuals deemed to have subversive leanings. This list totaled nineteen pages and included novelist Julio Cortazar and folk singer Mercedes Sosa.30 This targeting of musicians in Chile and Argentina parallels similar targeting of musicians in the U.S.
Nazi-run German communities aided drug trafficking in many of the Operation Condor participating countries. A New York Times article recounted how notorious Nazi doctor Joseph Mengele moved from Argentina to Paraguay in 1959, living in a Nazi colony, Hohenhau. A right-wing dictator of German descent, Alfredo Stroessner, ruled Paraguay. Mengele then moved to Brazil before he died in 1979.31
In 1985, the Associated Press published the article “War Criminal Mengele Linked to Drug Trafficking,” based on declassified CIA documents regarding Mengele’s drug activity in Latin America in the 1970s.32 Paraguayan intelligence documents found in 1993 detailed how President Stroessner worked with the CIA and the community of Nazis in Paraguay’s southern region in the 1970s.33
Nazi Klaus Barbie directed CIA-supported operations in Bolivia. As a U.S. intelligence asset, Barbie helped coordinate six top drug lords in the overthrow of the government, in what the media dubbed as the first “Cocaine Coup,” in 1980. Barbie directed security and aided the cocaine trafficking. Covert Action, a magazine started by CIA whistleblower Phil Agee, published a photo of a Nazi flag planted atop a Bolivian mountain at the time of that coup.34
