Chapter

Seventeen

“My guess is his dog consumed something toxic,” Jon deduces as he sits across from Sam, in their favorite booth, at their favorite restaurant, Gabbiano’s, “Chocolate?”

“I was sworn to secrecy by our dear friend Milton,” Sam confirms, sipping her martini. “Ooo, this is yummy. Just what I needed to cap off my day of real-life mystery.”

“Whatever it was, it’s gonna wind up costing him a fortune.”

“In dollars,” Sam responds, “or parental emotional pain and suffering?”

“The vet bill,” Jon clarifies.

“I know,” she says, giving him a wink, “but when it comes to our four-legged best friends, there is no price we are not willing to pay, correct?”

That is the correct response.

“They are indeed priceless,” he responds, lifting his glass of Syrah to cheers her, taking in the ring he put on her finger two nights ago. “That goes well with your martini.”

“I concur,” Sam says with a smile, clinking her glass with his.

Jon reaches over to select a bread option from the basket in the center of the table.

“Why do they cover all these breads in seeds nowadays?” he asks, pulling one of the few sans seeded choices. “I’m a man, not a bird.”

“Tell me about your meeting in Phoenix,” Sam suggests, trying to sound as interested as possible in something she has no interest in.

“You don’t really wanna hear about a bunch of boring eggheads gathering together to discuss the future of the insurance industry, do you?”

“Not really, if I’m being honest.”

“I don’t want to hear about it either and I had to be there,” he laughs, lifting his wine glass to take a sip. “You want to hear about the accommodations.”

“You know me so well,” she smiles at him.

“The Phoenician is somethin’,” he smiles back. “You would love it.”

“Perhaps next time I’ll go with you.”

“Please do,” he agrees. “They have very large beds.”

“Oh? Do they?”

“Yes, and they are very empty when you sleep in them all alone,” he pouts.

“So, about the other night…,” she begins hesitantly.

“When I got back?” he asks, picking up his butter knife.

“Yes, I was, well, a bit out of sorts.”

“You seemed a bit overwhelmed,” he agrees. “Is overwhelmed a fair assessment?”

“I was,” she sighs, watching him paint his bread, “Am.”

“Mac and I spoke about it,” he replies as he takes a bite.

“Yes, I heard.”

“No one is conspiring against you, sweetheart. He is as concerned about you as I am.”

“Yes,” she says, forcing a smile. “Jon, there’s something I need to tell you…”

Oh no. She’s going to tell him? Now? Here? The poor man hasn’t even had his salad yet.

“Something you may have some difficulty understanding…,” she continues.

She’s gonna do it. She’s really doing this. She’s going to tell him that she’s been lying to him this entire time. How she and my dad are still…

“Sandy Crowley was in my living room last night,” Sam blurts out.

OK, not where I thought we were going, but good. Yes. This is good. Start here with the part that sounds a little crazy and then move your way on over to the completely insane still not divorced yet part.
