Most of the day passes without incident, with more snow, and I find myself getting really tired despite the cold. Part of me wonders what's going to happen when we finally get to the Elijah's castle and how I'm going to prove my innocence when the time comes.
And what happens if Ramsey is dead? How do I come to terms with that?
Just ahead, there's a clearing, which is a welcome reprieve considering all the rocks and uneven terrain buried beneath the snow. I'm hoping that with a wide open area, it won't be so hard to ride because this is for the birds. My legs are tired of riding, and I'm wondering if the soreness will ever abate.
My horse stumbles among the hidden rocks, and I clench the reins, uneasy. The soldier charged with keeping up with me watches me closely, but I can see fatigue in his eyes, too. We're all tired, and all this madness is wearing on us. Elijah has been one step ahead of us the whole time, and we're no closer to discovering who the weak link is than when we first started looking. The only difference is everyone's eyes focused in my direction.
We've just reached the clearing when I hear Isaiah yelling, "Get off the horses and take cover beneath the trees!"
There's a mad scramble around me as the soldiers comply with his orders while I sit like a stone, trying to figure out what is going on.
"What's happening?" I shout to be heard over the chaos.
"Get down!" the soldier beside me yells as he rushes to dismount.
"Why?"
"It's coming!" he yells
I know I should listen, but thanks to something in his tone, whether it's the panic or the surge of adrenaline, I freeze.
Seconds later, the sky explodes with red wings. I suck in air, staring dumbly ahead as the massive, scaly bodies of dragons blot out the heavens. I think of the glass ornaments I bought years ago when I was fascinated with both dragons and pegasi, wishing both were real.
I'd take that wish back now, if I could, but as I stare at the largest of the beasts flying right at me, I don't think that's going to help.
"Get off the horse!" the soldier yells.
I'm the only one still mounted, and I can't seem to get off. Instead, it's the horse that takes charge, his front hooves rising into the air as he neighs loudly.
The sudden movement almost throws me, and I grip the reins more tightly just to stay on Chester's back. As that doesn't lose me, the horse takes off, scurrying from the path.
"Stop!" the guard yells, and even though I try to control the horse, not necessarily to stop it but at least have some say in where it's taking me, Chester has other ideas. Whether this is anything like the last excursion or it's simply that the stupid horse has a fear of dragons I don't know. What I do know is that it takes everything I have just to stay on the stupid animal because he's charging like mad through the forest.
