One problem with this approach, however, is that it might encourage clients to grab onto easily accessible associations and avoid adding their own. Perhaps clients would have to explicitly ask for help if they were struggling, or associations could be offered only sporadically, as a therapist might do in a traditional dream interpretation session.

CASE STUDY

The case that follows (which is used with permission) is an illustration of self-guided dream work using The Dream Toolbox (from the Hill et al. [in press] study). The client was a 19-year-old male college student research volunteer earning credit for participation and unaware of the hypotheses of the study. The client had fairly good dream recall (he recalled dreaming just about every morning) and ability to remember having dreams (he had memorable dreams just about every night).

First, the client retold the dream in the first-person present tense. Words in boldface type in the dream text were selected by the client as elements to work with in the dream interpretation process.

I’m walking outside through the rain; it’s pouring, and I am getting soaked. I don’t 100% recognize the area; however, I get the feeling it’s our old farm… which my family owns. I run inside only to find myself surrounded by family members, the only one I can truly make out is my uncle. I’m feeling quite smothered for some reason, so I ask to go to the bathroom, which is quite elaborate. I then turn around only to find that my family members have followed me. I then wake up.
