Part Two

Chapter 11

COUNTRYSIDE. A FAIRY TALE CASTLE. WALL TO WALL MEN.

Men will always be mad, and those that think they can cure them,- the maddest of all.

The snow had stopped and we were off at last, just Viv and me in the old hospital mini bus, heading out of London.

A deep depression had settled upon me and I just stared out into the deepening darkness, where the streets now looked like a very badly iced cake. Evening had turned into night, and it seemed as if a hand had reached out and turned off all the lights as we moved further out of the city.

The full moon raced ahead of us, cradled in stars which twinkled much too merrily for my desperately low spirits.

We both soon dozed off with our heads on the luggage, and in fact must have been asleep for quite some time, when, I was awoken by the sensation of the mini bus stopping and turning sharply.

There were voices, of which, I slowly became aware.- Realizing where I was; they came as a bit of a surprise, and it was obvious by the blast of cold air from the open window that Frank our driver, was holding a conversation with someone outside.

Viv, still asleep and oblivious to the fact that we had obviously arrived, in what had seemed to me to be only a very short time, remained with her head on one of her carrier bags.

I peered curiously out, to see that very big gates were now being opened and a light shone down brightly from a lodge-like building, which had icicles hanging from its eaves that sparkled mysteriously in the glow. We pulled off into a drive, looking at first as if it led to nowhere, so thick with snow were the overhanging trees. The branches of some brushed the top of the mini-bus, and gave the impression of a tunnel, as we now began our ascent to the hospital… My first glimpse of the building took my breath away. I saw tall ornamental towers picked out in the moonlight, having huge cathedral-like windows with lights shining from beyond.

Everywhere, were spotlights which seemed to shine seductively onto turrets and ornamental brickwork, giving the place the appearance of a medieval castle. Huge trees seemed everywhere, glistening with ice and snow, as the moon cast it’s magical, silvery light down amongst them, it’s shadowy face, and gentle eyes gazing down upon the scene as it made its gentle flight from huge tangled treetop to huge tangled treetop.

We seemed to drive on and on, then up and around a long sweep in the drive, the huge windows coming closer, until they towered above us; until, we eventually drew up beside a huge door, which would have been more suited to a Transylvanian opera set. Frank got out and pulled down on the ancient looking bell rope. It clanged, rousing Viv, who now sat up and looked out of the window through cupped hands, leaving me, to pinch myself to make quite sure that I was not dreaming.
