Developing a thematic structure

In contrast to the grounded theory procedures outlined above, first a deepening analysis of a single case (i.e. the first interview) will be carried out. This case analysis pursues several aims: one is to preserve and elucidate the relations between meanings that the interviewee presents concerning the topic of the study. This is why a case study is done for all cases in the study.

A second aim is to develop a system of categories for the analysis of the single case. To elaborate this system of categories (similar to grounded theory), it is necessary to apply, first, open coding and then selective coding. Here, selective coding aims less at developing a grounded core category across all cases than at generating thematic domains and categories for the single case first.

After analyzing the first cases, the categories and thematic domains identified for each case should be cross-checked. From this cross-checking a thematic structure results: this will then underlie the analysis of further cases in order to increase their comparability. The excerpts given in Box 5.3 as an example (of such a thematic structure), come from our study on technological change in everyday life previously mentioned (Flick, 1996).
