Going it alone

When I started to look for in-house learning and development roles I had to let go of my aspired identity as a freelance coach and develop a new identity as a learning and development practitioner. As I applied for roles, my knowledge of autoethnography enabled me to see the value of establishing a narrative that spoke of and to the culture of which I was seeking to become a member. On the one hand, I created a social media presence (on for example LinkedIn, Twitter), building connections within and knowledge of that professional domain. And I regularly updated a professional profile (CV) by seeking the critical perspective of cultural ‘insiders’. I reflexively reviewed my interactions on social media sites to understand how I was relating to members of that culture, and to shape over time a professional identity that felt authentic and credible. Thus my writing became ‘both process and product’ (Ellis et al., 2011). On the other hand, autoethnography gave me a language to employ in interviews when asked why I wanted to move from a freelance to an in-house role – namely that I preferred to work from the ‘inside out’. Now, working for a large organisation, I reflect on the journey that I have made from student-practitioner of coaching to teacher of student-practitioners, applying autoethnographic principles to the production of coaching training to enable colleagues to understand how their identity as cultural insiders influences their own coaching practice.

Table 6.3 summarises key learnings from my research.
