Chapter Six

Who Does What? Archaeological Roles in Cultural Resource Management and Beyond

Most archaeologists would probably be happiest doing research all the time, but few if any of us do that. And when we are doing research, we typically assume more or less specialized roles; almost nobody as an individual, carries out the whole research enterprise. When you're thinking about doing archaeology, it's useful to think about the different roles that archaeologists fill, or that relate somehow to doing archaeology. Some of them will probably be more comfortable fits for you than others. In this chapter we'll outline some of the major roles that people play in and around archaeology, with an emphasis on those related to Cultural Resource Management.
