Daniel Inouye

Daniel K. Inouye, a recipient of the Congressional Medal of Honor, was the first American of Japanese descent to serve in the United States House of Representatives and Senate. As a second lieutenant, he led successful attacks on key artillery posts in Italy under heavy fire during World War II. His right arm was shattered by a grenade in the operations and later had to be amputated.

1917

A federal immigration law defines a geographic zone from which no immigrants can be accepted. It includes India and other Asian countries.
