Chapter 15
_(*(*(-)*)*)_
Red
What the holy hell?
My eyes snapped open, and I bolted upright. I looked around in panic. I wasn’t in my bed – well, the bed I’d been sleeping in. The bed shook again. I peered into the darkness, but the only thing I could sense was the house protesting the ground’s movement. I pressed my hands to my face and tried to swallow my whimpers. I jumped again when the door swung open.
“It’s just me.” Nixon stuck his head into the room. He took one look at me, shut the door behind him and strode into the room. He approached my side of the bed but stopped short.
“Are you okay?”
I nodded. I didn’t trust myself to speak. I was too focused on trying to feel if the room was still moving.
Nixon stood watching me, as if trying to decide to stay or leave. He was in sweat pants and a t-shirt now, but I could still remember what he looked like in just his boxers.
“Was I too loud?” I asked pulling my hands from my face.
Nixon shook his head. “No, I couldn’t sleep. I felt the aftershock and figured you would either be dead to the world, or up and pulling your hair out.”
I stuck my tongue out at him. “I was doing neither.”
“Yeah, biting your nails is very attractive.”
“Shut up.” I lay back down in the bed, turning my back to him. I pulled the sheet up to my chin and tried to pretend like I could fall back asleep. I couldn’t. I could feel him standing in the darkness, taking up too much space, radiating too much energy. I pressed my eyes closed and prayed he would leave.
I felt the bed tremble again. Another squeak escaped me.
I turned back toward him, ready to ask if he felt the movement too when he moved to leave the room. I freaked. I took it back. I didn’t want him to go.
“So, like what if I'm sleeping and the ground opens up and I fall in?”
Nixon stopped and chuckled. “The ground won't open up wide enough for the entire house to fall in. Relax.”
“Really?” I asked sitting up. “Because I read this story about how this guy was taking a nap and then his whole damn house—well, his bedroom at least—fell into a giant hole. They couldn’t even go down there to look for him because they were afraid the hole would collapse. That shit was real, I saw it on the news.”
“That,” he said moving to the other side of the bed, “was a very unique case of a sinkhole.”
“Then that means it can happen, right? An earthquake can totally cause a sinkhole, right?”
“You need to relax.” He sat down at the edge of the bed. I felt my body being pulled toward him as his weight depressed the mattress.
“But –”
“Red,” he said, giving me a stern look.
“But you're not a seismologist or a geologist? So I could be totally justified while you're sitting there blissfully ignorant.” I watched in horror as Nixon slid up the bed.
