Michael would not be considered a success by Roger’s standards, but this former street kid has defied the odds to establish a stable home and become steadily employed. His desire for a family and companionship led him to join a group of teenagers who were like him: disposable. He was a low-risk kid who had slipped under the radar, only to resurface after developing obvious antisocial behaviors that he saw as necessary for his survival.

Michael is very clear in identifying why well-intentioned group home staff members don’t always connect with teenagers. It is imperative that staff members have a good understanding of the differences between their own lives and those of the kids they work with. This shouldn’t be mistaken for pity, but seen instead as an acknowledgment that these kids’ lives have been challenging largely through no fault of their own. Kids such as Michael are actually offended by the sympathy expressed by social workers, and this almost always causes them to put up communication barriers, making progress extremely difficult.
