A metaphor that most theories of word recognition incorporate is activation. To understand the notion of activation, you can think of the word representations in your mind as light bulbs – when they’re active, they’re turned on, and that means you are considering that word as a possible candidate for the identity of the word you’re hearing. In the phoneme restoration effect, it appears as though the activation of a word causes the activation of its component phonological units, even those that were not recoverable from the acoustic input. Later in this chapter you’ll see an example of a theory of word recognition that takes the notion of activation quite literally, as a fundamental part of its representations and processes.
