Dahl was dressed as a general storming the field. War was declared.

By 1980, disco was defeated on mainstream Chicago radio and WDAI switched to the Top 40/oldies mixed format it has today as WLS-FM. On February 6, 1981, Dahl was fired by WLUP for “continued assaults on community standards.” Meier was offered Dahl’s gig, but refused it in a show of solidarity. On February 23, 1981, the team signed a five-year contract with WLS-FM, which of course, used to be WDAI.

“The other album rock station in town was WMET,” Dahl recalled. “I get fired and Garry comes along with me. We meet at the Hyatt with [WMET General Manager] Bruce Holberg and he doesn’t believe we got fired. He thinks we’re fucking pranking him. I’m like, ‘Dude, this is real, you’ll reap all these rewards.’ He didn’t believe it. I ended up having to buy lunch, four corned beef sandwiches that were four bucks each. It was weird, like, ‘What do I have to do to prove to you I got fired?’ So then John Gehron [program director of WLS] called.” Steve and Garry were resurrected on the afternoon drive shift on WLS-FM.
