Reflections

While I was in this house I was worried for myself and, of course, my colleague. This was a really uncomfortable visit. Even if I didn’t know about Adam’s family reputation, his presentation spoke volumes. He did not need to change his voice or do anything specific to be intimidating. It was really difficult to hold my authority and keep to a beginning, middle and end in the visit, when his body language was not congruent with his presentation. I knew I had to stick at it to do my job properly, but I was intimidated, for sure.

If I had not had my colleague with me I don’t think I would have pushed to see round the house. I wanted to see if there was anyone else in there that they had not told us about and to get an idea of what Meikal’s living conditions would be like if he returned. I did not expect to find evidence of drug misuse, but I looked round to observe and find out about their values and lifestyle. I thought I was gaining a reasonable picture of what it must be like to be a child living with Adam. I did think that Bianka was aware that she was disempowered and wondered if she had been trying to protect Meikal by letting him stay at friends. I wonder how Meikal’s role and identity had been compromised when Adam arrived.

This visit was more assessment than intervention. To follow up, I think I need a discussion with Bianka on her own to see her more genuine position and the reasons she thinks THEORY: Attribution Meikal is refusing to come home. If she sticks to what she has said already or shares more concerning information, we may have to find a more formalised temporary placement for Meikal and try and resolve the issues. Maybe Adam is scared that he will be homeless, as their house is in Bianka’s name. VALUES: Dignity and respect

It is quite unusual for an 11-year-old child to tell people that he has ‘left home’ and I know I need to hear what he is communicating. I know what my gut feeling is saying too, and I am listening to it, but I need to know more so I can make a better assessment based on more evidence.
