Chapter 6
Product Definition and MVP Evolution
After composing product requirements, the PM works with stakeholders (e.g., designers and supply-chain partners) to address these requirements through appropriate product features (e.g., product functions, software interfaces, hardware speed, etc.). The response, called product definition , identifies which subset of requirements will be addressed, in what timeframe, and through which release. The goals of this chapter are to familiarize the PM and the product teams with DPMT concepts related to initial product definitio n and its subsequent evolution. In this chapter, we:
Introduce the purpose of the minimum viable product (MVP) and clarify the distinction between a MVP and a prototype.
Explain the theory of Diffusion of Innovation (DOI) and its relevance to product evolution.
Discuss the use of analytically based experimentation in evolving the MVP and maximizing product-market fit.
