BUT DON’T YOU NEED CARBS FOR ENERGY?

Most nutritional guidelines and dietitians will tell you that you require at least 100 to 130 grams of carbohydrates per day to fuel your brain. While it is true that your brain will use those carbohydrates if you eat a high-carb diet, it doesn’t necessarily have to.

Your brain doesn’t use carbs because it needs them; it uses them because they are available and easy to use. Too much sugar (glucose) circulating in your bloodstream is toxic and causes a lot of damage to the blood vessels in your heart, brain, kidneys, and eyes, so your body burns as much as it can and stores the rest (as glycogen in your liver and muscles if there is room or as fat).

What’s important to understand, though, is that your brain can obtain all the energy it needs from other sources. Although your brain corresponds to only two percent of your body weight, it utilizes an impressive 25 percent of the calories you eat. Even if your brain requires a lot of energy, it doesn’t need this energy to come exclusively from carbohydrates.
