Sidebar 11.1: Case of Amaya—identifying Obsessions and Compulsions

Amaya is a 5-year-old girl who attends preschool. Her parents have brought her into counseling because they have noticed some odd behaviors. Amaya's parents have observed that when someone unfamiliar to Amaya comes to the home and Amaya sees the stranger, she immediately gathers up all of her dolls and starts lining the dolls into a single row in the front entryway. When the parents have tried to move the dolls out of the way before she has them all in a line, she will scream and tantrum for up to an hour. Her parents also report noticing that Amaya will do things to make sure that her body experiences sensations evenly. For example, when Amaya's mother kisses Amaya's right cheek, Amaya will turn her left cheek for her mother to kiss. Amaya will also sit on the edge of the bathtub and place her feet into the bathtub at the same time instead of one foot at a time. Amaya's parents describe Amaya as “quirky” and want you to help her with these odd behaviors before she starts kindergarten in the fall.
