CHILD ABUSE AS A MEDICAL PROBLEM

The physical maltreatment of children has become a recognized problem only in the last century. “Child abuse” has become a medical problem only in the past two decades. This is not to say that children did not suffer willful harm resulting in injury or death prior to the last century; they certainly did. The history of child maltreatment, neglect, and physical injury is a long one, but it is only in the past two decades that child abuse became clearly defined as a social and medical problem. This section traces that development.
