Usually, a companyâs office workers will travel each day to work together in the same space. This has a lot of associated costs, including rising early, buying workplace clothing, transportation and hours of child care for children of employees. It has costs for the business as well, as it maintains office space and other facilities like bathrooms that have enough capacity to support all the workers at the same time. Those same facilities usually sit empty for half the hours in a day, while the company pays for utilities and someone to clean the space. New technology has made it possible for coworkers to keep in constant contact and move files with ease. Not only that, research shows that many employees prefer to work from home, and even when they are in the same office, they still communicate primarily over the same technology that they would use to work from home. There are also social benefits to teleworking like less traffic and less pollution. Yet, many employees would like to work from home but are told they canât because itâs not a traditional model for an office. In 2013, Yahoo! CEO Marisa Mayer distressed employees by telling them that the companyâs policies allowing work from home were going away. The companyâs head of human resources, Jackie Reses, wrote a memo that said:
To become the absolute best place to work, communication and collaboration will be important, so we need to be working side-by-side. That is why it is critical that we are all present in our offices. . . . Speed and quality are often sacrificed when we work from home. We need to be one Yahoo, and that starts with physically being together. (Cited in Thompson, 2013)
