CHAPTER TWENTY
âI beg your pardon?â Shocked, she stared at her friends.
âYou know Warwick. Our brother.â Dorrie had a smug look on her face.
âYou cannot be serious?â She looked from one to the other. Neither were smiling. âHe⦠we, donât be ridiculous. We are like siblings.â
âAre you still like siblings?â Somer asked. âBecause I feel like that may have changed since you left us.â
âI did not leave you. I was studying art!â
âNo need to raise your voice. We are right here, as we were five minutes ago,â Dorrie said. She leaned closer, studying Samanthaâs face. âAre you blushing?â
Somer did the same. âI think she is.â
âStop it, both of you,â Samantha hissed. She strode away from them. Well, stomped actually. âThis conversation is over and silly.â As if her life was not turned on its head already, the twins were now adding to that.
But youâve been thinking what they have lately.
âIf you say so,â Somer said, following. âBut he has saved you, and I think something happened between you on the return journey from Wales.â
âShut up,â Samantha gritted out.
âNo need to get testy.â Dorrie looked as smug as her sister did. âDonât you think sheâs testy, Somer?â
âI am not testy, and what you said was foolish.â
âApologies. Forget we said anything,â Somer said.
âYou are right. How silly of us,â Dorrie added.
âWe must have gotten things wrong and seen what wasnât there,â Somer said.
âExactly. Now we are here and do not have much time. So⦠so, control yourselves.â
âYes, Samantha,â they said together with a show of meekness that fooled no one.
The brothel was in an area of London that businessmen frequented, hence theyâd said it was their old tutor they were seeing. That story had seemed the most plausible, as theyâd used it before, and the area was clean and tidy with no scoundrels lurking in corners. At least Samantha hoped they werenât.
Warwick was absolutely not her Sinclair.
Mrs. Dillyâs brothel was at the end of a street. A tall, narrow white building with bright flowers lining the front entrance. It looked like any of the places around it, but behind those doors, things were vastly different. They walked to the rear and knocked on the door.
A young man answered in seconds.
âWe wish to see Mrs. Dilly, please. Tell her that Lady Samantha, Mrs. Dorset Charlton, and Mrs. Somerset Charlton have called please.â
They did not have long to wait before they were escorted up the stairs to the floor above.
âHow wonderful to have you visit,â Mrs. Dilly said when they entered her rooms.
She was a beautiful woman with a curvaceous figure and masses of deep russet hair styled in the current fashion. She always dressed in soft lavenders or pinks, and each garment was trimmed in the most exquisite lace. She wore a large ruby on the middle finger of her left hand and diamonds sparkled at her neck.
Samantha thought she could grace any ballroom and not appear out of place, other than the fact she was the owner of a brothel.
âSuch beauties you all are,â she said, waving them to seats.
