Impetigo

Impetigo is an acute, contagious Gram-positive bacterial infection of the upper layers of the epidermis (Figure III.30). Impetigo arises near the site of Staphylococcus aureus colonization, for example, in the nares (Wolff, Johnson, & Saavedra, 2013). Impetigo affects children most often, usually those living in warm, moist climates. Impetigo accounts for 50% to 60% of all bacterial skin infections. Impetigo is a result of a disruption of the environmental factors that protect the skin (Feaster & Singer, 2010).
