“THREE BOTTLES of water, please.” Ryan waited while the vendor dug into his cart for the cold, dripping bottles. He handed the kid a ten-dollar bill, collected his purchases, and turned back into the crowd.

The zoo teemed with people. Overexcited children bounced around like super balls, wanting to see everything all at once and dragging exhausted parents behind them. He paused in the middle of the path, letting the masses stream around him, and watched as his niece shined a sleepy smile up at her mother. They sat together on a bench in front of the zoo’s savanna exhibit. Mya stretched out on the bench and rested her head in Maggie’s lap.

Ryan and Maggie did their level best to keep up with her, but it hadn’t been easy. Thank God her little battery had finally run down. The kid had enough energy to light up a small Midwestern town.

He turned his attention to his sister. She looks better, I think. A healthy pink seemed to have replaced her awful pallor. Of course, running around the zoo on the heels of a turbocharged eight-year-old could make anyone flush. Even the tiny improvement, though, lightened the weight he’d carried for so long and strengthened his resolve to ensure that Corporate South honored its contract.

He slid onto the bench next to Maggie and slung an arm behind her, resting it on the top of the bench.

“How are you feeling?” He handed her a bottle of water.

“Good. A bit tired, but better than I’ve felt in ages. I think we could use a nap, though.” Maggie smiled down at her daughter and stroked the gleaming, unruly gold that her braids barely contained.

“How’d your doctor’s appointment go this morning? You know I would have taken you.”

“I’m not an invalid, and you’ve given up too much of your time carting me around. Besides, I didn’t want Mya there. She’s spent too much time in hospitals and doctor’s offices lately. She needed a break and some kid time courtesy of Uncle Ryan.”

He smiled down at the sleeping girl and played with the end of her braid, rubbing the soft hair between his fingers. “We had a good time.”

Maggie patted his thigh, then rested her hand there. “Good. The appointment went fine. I’m so tired of getting poked and prodded.” She laid her head on his shoulder. “We basically talked about keeping me ‘healthy’ for as long as possible. No more nasty bouts of pneumonia.”

“Sounds like a good plan to me.”

“I’m not holding out much hope for a drug trial or experimental treatment. I think we’re beyond that stage at this point.” She looked at him, and for the first time since her diagnosis, he saw a hint of worry in her eyes. “I’m not sure I’m going to beat this disease, Ry.” She sniffled.

He pressed a kiss to her head. “Don’t you give up on me. We’ve got a long, hard road ahead of us. Who knows what will happen.”

Maggie pulled out a tissue she’d tucked under her bra strap and wiped her nose.
