Theo Sanchez observed his mom beneath his gaze as she prepped to open the café for the day. If you asked him, her usual sarcasm had worsened in recent days. “Have you finished with that killer case?”

She meant the one involving Rose Denison. She’d made no secret to him about how she detested their family after they sheltered him. “You know I can’t talk about an ongoing investigation.”

“If you were any good as a cop, you would convict that killer before anyone else got hurt instead of sniffing around people’s houses searching for evidence,” she spat out with her dark curls bouncing off her shoulder. To say they were like night and day was stating the obvious. He wondered what made her that way but chose not to ask.

Theo ground his teeth and bit back a reply as he set the napkins out on the tables. “Ma, you can’t keep spreading stuff about the Denison family. Remember what happened last time you did? Plus, it’s not fair judging someone before you know all the facts.” Theo prayed that one day his mom would learn to control her tongue. So far, it hadn’t happened.

“Why did I expect you to take my side on this? As far as you’re concerned, they are your family. Murderers and killers.” She glared at him, slammed a stir spoon on the counter, and stalked to the back room.

Things were degenerating, as they usually did when she was in one of her moods. So Theo silently finished his task of setting the tables and refilling salt and pepper shakers, certain the morning’s influx of breakfast customers would be served well. He checked his watch. He had to leave before he went late for his first meeting.

His job as a cop was to protect everyone, not only those his mom deemed worthy of protection. As he headed out, he said a quick prayer that she wouldn’t unleash on the customers. Then he dashed out the door.
