Darcy jumped a fence that was separating two fields. He was growing tired. He rode his horse back toward the trail and heard a familiar voice accompanied by applause.

“Bravo, Mr. Darcy. You are a fine horseman.” Elizabeth Bennet stood on the trail that lay on the edge of the clearing. She had been watching him drive his steed and practice jumps for a quarter of an hour. “It was an impressive show, but I admit, watching you, I was so engrossed, I did not happen to see your pursuer.”

“Bingley asked that I engage in a riding competition. I was merely attempting to see if my skills were up to the task.”

“I cannot imagine you would have anything to fear from such a competition. Surely, you would best any man in England riding like that.”

“The stakes are terribly high. It is something I very much wish to pass on. But I gave him my word I would do all I could to help. In fact, I truly want to help. Bingley is like a brother to me. Indeed, he saved my life.”

“I cannot say my sister has saved my life, but I do know the strength of the bonds of sisterly love. I assume it must be as strong for brothers. I can think of nothing I would not sacrifice to assure Jane’s happiness.” Elizabeth reflected for a moment. “Does this have something to do with helping Miss Bingley untangle herself from the scandal she found herself in last evening?”

“It does, indeed. Your power of observation is impressive, Miss Bennet.”

“It is not always so. In fact, I must confess, I have misjudged you, Mr. Darcy. When we first met, I felt you were a proud, arrogant man who thought of himself above all others. I have come to see, over the past twenty-four hours, that you are a considerate man who thinks first of protecting his friends and is true to his word. These are most admirable qualities, and I deeply respect you for them. After nearly being taken in by Mr. Wickham, a man who has all the appearances of honor but has treated Mr. Bingley as if his friendship means nothing and has lied to me directly, you, sir, are a breath of fresh air. Know that in helping Mr. Bingley, you are helping my dearest sister, and in turn, you are helping me. Which is the second time in so short a period you have come to my aid. You were of great comfort to me last night, and I most humbly thank you. I hope you will accept my apology and my friendship and know I will be there to cheer you on as you show Mr. Wickham what’s what in terms of riding.”

Until today, Mr. Darcy could not recall any occasion where he had wished he had not encountered Miss Elizabeth during one of her daily strolls. Now, Darcy understood how Abraham must have felt being told by the one he worshipped he must sacrifice something so dear to demonstrate his loyalty.
